Eavestroughs/Gutters

Gutters and eavestrough are used interchangeably and mean the same thing. Your gutters may seem superfluous at first, particularly if your home has a large overhanging area for the soffits. Where your gutters earn their keep is by guiding the water to a corner of your home to an area away from the foundation of your home. If any section of your eavestrough is incomplete or clogged, this can lead to water backing up onto your roof causing ice damming and/or leaks inside your home. A minimum of 5” continuous eavestrough is recommended for most homes. Downspout extensions should run a minimum of 6 feet away from the foundation to ensure the water coming off your roof doesn’t find it’s way back into your home.

Installing Eavestroughs

Installing eavestroughs is not as simple as you might think. There needs to be careful planning and measuring before the project begins. Where to put the downspouts can be as easy as replacing your current downspout in the same locations, but what if you don’t like where they are, and it’s causing you issues, especially in the winter? We make sure to find out if you have any issues with your downspout locations and can recommend ‘best locations’ due to our knowledge and experience, having installed eavestroughs on Edmonton homes and business for many, many years… we know what works and what doesn’t.

Proper sloping of the gutters… choose a professional eavestrough contractor

Many Edmonton eavestrough installations have improper sloping of the gutters towards the downspouts. This happens because of inexperienced (or lazy) eavestrough installers ‘eyeballing’ the slope adjustment, instead of using a level, which is a big no-no and can cause many issues. Imagine having just paid a contractor for your beautiful new gutters, and feeling kind of excited waiting for the first rain, only to find that water is not draining properly, and pooling in an area over your front door.

At Rapid Roofing & Repairs, we make sure your eavestrough are installed professionally (including the use of levels to measure gutter slope), to ensure that water flows to the proper areas. You can rest assured that it will be done right – we guarantee it.

Proper installation of downspouts… choose an experienced eavestrough contractor

We often see instances where eavestrough installation contractors have cut corners with upper roof downspouts. They run upper roof downspouts onto the lower roof. Many times, this practice will be picked up by your home inspector as an area of concern with a recommendation to extend the downspouts to the lower gutters, or even directly to the ground if possible. The practice of having your upper downspouts drain onto your lower roof shortens the lifespan of your shingles. If you drive around your neighborhood and look at the homes with downspouts draining onto the lower roof, you will likely see the shingles curling and signs of premature aging.

At Rapid Roofing & Repairs, we make sure your downspouts are installed professionally, we don’t cut corners trying to make a few extra dollars. You can rest assured that it will be done right – we guarantee it.

Gutter guards

Always having to clean your gutters? Why not install heavy duty gutter guards and say goodbye to climbing up a ladder and cleaning gutters. So, if you need to replace your roof and want your eavestrough changed as well, call Rapid Roofing & Repairs and get it all done through one contractor.

How can I tell if I need new gutters or eavestroughs?

If you start noticing any pooling of water anywhere in your gutters, leaks in several areas or they simply look beat up! Furthermore, when replacing your roof, many people take the opportunity to replace their gutters at the same time.

I’m tired cleaning by gutters every year (or 2-3 times per year). Would gutter guards help?

Gutter guards are great in this type of situation or if your roof is high and hard to get to, the guards are a blessing. Install them once and you are done.

I know what you are thinking, I just can’t wait to spend my money on new eavestroughs and gutter guards. Ok, maybe not…

Having new eavestroughs installed is not as sexy as buying a new television, but If you have to get it done, make sure you hire a professional Edmonton eavestrough contractor that is fully licensed and bonded, WCB approved, and with an Edmonton Better Business Bureau A+ rating. And more importantly, hire an eavestrough contractor who cares about your home as if it were his own.
